Motivation:

- The concepts of music are quite easily linked to social studies allowing students a deeper understanding of the differences and similarities of cultures.
Equipment and Materials:
- For this activity we were constructing Kalimbas, materials will vary depending on the instrument being taught.
- Wood block
- Doweling
- Screws
- Screw drivers
- Popsicle sticks
- Wood strapping to hold down popsicle sticks
- Sandpaper
Step-by-Step Process or Procedure:
1. Show students an example of a kalimba and its sound.
2. Show students an example of a kalimba that you have constructed
3. Have students smooth the sides of the block with sandpaper
4. Drill holes in strapping.
5. Screw strapping in part way.
6. Slide Popsicle sticks in between the block and the strap.
7. Tighten until sticks are tight but still moveable.
8. Slide doweling under the Popsicle sticks.
